Lions GM: Situation with Kerryon Johnson 'a work in progress'

On Wednesday, it was reported that the Detroit Lions planned to release Kerryon Johnson, but general manager Brad Holmes downplayed the report during an interview with "PFT Live," saying that Johnson's status with the team was "a work in progress."

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport first reported Johnson's release, which would put the 23-year-old on waivers, providing the other 31 teams the opportunity to claim him. If he does end up getting released, Johnson would likely generate interest from teams, given his age and the flashes of talent he has shown during his limited playing time.

Through three seasons, Johnson struggled to establish himself as a go-to back with the Lions, with his rushing attempts and yards dropping each season. His role in the running back rotation all but disappeared last season, as he gained less than 200 yards on the ground while averaging just 3.5 yards per carry. And with the Lions signing Jamaal Williams to back up D'Andre Swift, many assumed Johnson's days in Detroit were numbered.

However, based on Holmes' comments, it sounds like the Lions may still have interest in holding on to Johnson, who is set to make $1.37 million in the final year of his rookie contract.
