Patriots players reportedly believe in Mac Jones over Bailey Zappe

It appears the New England Patriots aren't dealing with much of a quarterback controversy involving second-year pro Mac Jones and rookie Bailey Zappe as it pertains to their teammates.

For a piece published Thursday, NFL Media's Mike Giardi shared multiple statistics to argue why head coach Bill Belichick should and likely will go back to Jones once the signal-caller recovers from the reported high-ankle sprain that's kept him sidelined since Week 3. Deep in the article, Giardi also somewhat casually noted that players within the New England locker room think "there is another level" the offense can reach and that "Jones is the guy that can get them there."

Giardi added such players are essentially hoping Jones will be cleared to start when the 3-3 Patriots host the 2-4 Chicago Bears in the upcoming "Monday Night Football" clash.

It was reported earlier in the day that Jones expects to be medically cleared to at least dress for Monday's matchup. Belichick hasn't confirmed he'll start Jones if the 24-year-old is available for Week 7.

Zappe, a fourth-round draft pick, initially replaced injured veteran backup Brian Hoyer (concussion) during what became a Week 4 loss at the Green Bay Packers on Oct. 2 and has since won his first two pro starts. Thus far, the 23-year-old has completed 51-of-70 passes (72.9%) for 596 yards with four touchdowns and one interception.

To compare, ESPN stats show Jones is 31st among eligible quarterbacks with a 76.2 passer rating, 28th with a 33.5 total QBR, and 13th with a 66.0% completion percentage for the season. He matched two touchdown throws with five interceptions before his injury.
