The San Francisco 49ers have lost middle linebacker Dre Greenlaw to an apparent left leg injury on Sunday as his team leads 3-0 against the Kansas City Chiefs. Greenlaw appeared to injure his lower left leg, not on a play, but as he was running onto the field after a kickoff. The former Arkansas Razorbacks star had to take a cart off the field. Following his trip to the locker room, the team announced his injury as an Achilles.
If he’s unable to return, it’s a major loss for the 49ers. Greenlaw was second on the San Francisco defense in tackles during the regular season. He had 120 total tackles with 1.5 sacks and five tackles for loss.
Prior to his exit from the game, Greenlaw had three tackles against the Chiefs. In the NFC divisional-round game, he had two interceptions, marking the first time in his five-year career that he posted multiple interceptions in a single game.
Jake Moody hits record-setting FG in Super Bowl LVIII
San Francisco 49ers kicker Jake Moody hit a 55-yard field goal to set a new Super Bowl record. With the kick, the 49ers took a 3-0 lead over the Kansas City Chiefs in the second quarter.
A rookie kicker out of Michigan, Moody was under a lot of pressure due some missed kicks throughout the year. However, he was clutch in nailing the first score of Super Bowl LVIII.
Moody gave the 49ers the lead and eventually forced an Isiah Pacheco fumble on the ensuing drive as the Chiefs had goal to go.
Travis Kelce blows up after Pacheco turnover
Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce had had a relatively quiet first half in Super Bowl LVIII through the first 20 minutes, but that changed following a key Chiefs mistake with about 10 minutes remaining until halftime.
With Kansas City driving into the red zone and threatening to score for the first time in the game, running back Isiah Pacheco fumbled the football and turned it over.
Kelce was not on the field for the play, apparently drawing his ire. The star tight end was seen on the sidelines yelling at coach Andy Reid, bumping into him in the process. That happened after he had already thrown his helmet down.
“We saw the frustration from Travis Kelce on Christmas Day, that’s exactly what he did when he came off the sidelines, throwing it down again in frustration,” CBS sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson said on the broadcast.
CBS broadcasters Jim Nantz and Tony Romo suggested on the broadcast that Kelce was mad because he wasn’t on the field for the play and his backup allowed a defender to get by who ultimately made the key play.
“Isaiah Pacheco also frustrated, went up and down the bench apologizing to everyone,” Wolfson reported. “Spent a lot of time with offensive coordinator Matt Nagy. He can not afford to have Pacheco lose confidence in himself. Andy Reid saying hold it high and tight, high and tight all day.”
