The Pittsburgh Steelers received puzzling news regarding San Francisco 49ers star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and his trade status. Adding fuel to the fire, Aiyuk decided to unfollow the 49ers on  Instagram.

Prior to this, reports surfaced that the Steelers had been actively pursuing Aiyuk for over a month through detailed text messages. Subsequently, rumors spread on social media suggesting that Aiyuk had requested a trade. However, his agent swiftly dismissed these rumors, stating there was no truth to them.

NFL Insider Ian Rapoport appeared on NFL Total Access to discuss what he had heard regarding Aiyuk and the trade rumors. While he made light of the unfollowing on social media, he acknowledged that it holds significance.

"So I am laughing, but it’s not that unfunny. It is a thing. A player unfollowing a team on social media. It doesn’t mean they are never going to be friends again. It’s not like he’s not going to like their posts, but it’s a message to the team that all is not well."

Rapoport further elaborated on his sentiments regarding the Aiyuk and the 49ers saga. During his breakdown of the Aiyuk situation he pointed out how the DeVonta Smith contract extension strengthens Aiyuk’s position to receive fair compensation for his worth.

"Now, as far as the trade request, I would agree with his agent. There has been no trade request. Obviously there have been some teams though who know that all is not well… To my knowledge, the 49ers have not entertained any of those talks."

Rapoport's analysis suggests that the ongoing discussions surrounding Aiyuk's contract negotiations are not just routine chatter; they're sparking intense interest from multiple NFL teams. As the 49ers navigate these talks, other teams are actively pursuing the possibility of trading for Aiyuk. While Rapoport didn't divulge specific teams, it wouldn't be surprising if the Steelers were among those expressing interest. In fact, based off of recent reports, we can assume the Steelers have been involved.

However, the 49ers have remained steadfast in their stance against trading Aiyuk. The crux of the matter seems to lie in reaching a consensus on the monetary value that both sides deem fair. Given Aiyuk's exceptional talent, he's poised to command a salary among the upper echelons of wide receivers in the league.

Should the Steelers pursue a trade for Aiyuk, they'll need to be prepared to part with significant assets to secure his services. Furthermore, acquiring him is only half the battle; they'll also need to allocate substantial financial resources and negotiate a long-term contract with the standout wide receiver.

The fact that the 49ers have rebuffed any trade inquiries underscores the likelihood that Aiyuk will remain with the team unless he himself seeks a trade, a scenario that hasn't materialized thus far.

Steelers Appear Destined To Draft Next Starting WR In Draft

The Steelers find themselves facing significant gaps to fill as they approach the upcoming NFL draft. For fans, it's an exhilarating time of anticipation, but for the organization, it's rife with pressure. This season marks a pivotal moment for the Steelers, having seemingly gone all-in with the acquisition of Russell Wilson. With the window to win narrowing, the urgency is palpable, particularly as their star-studded defense continues to age.

Trading away their standout wide receiver, Diontae Johnson, has only amplified the challenge. Now, they must secure a replacement capable of filling his shoes. It's no small feat to replace a player of Johnson's caliber—a skilled route runner and one of the league's top receivers—especially through the draft. However, the Steelers boast a history of adeptly uncovering wide receiver talent. Should they fail to strike a trade for a proven wideout to complement George Pickens, it seems increasingly likely that they'll turn to the draft in search of a budding star capable of making an immediate impact.
