Texans GM Nick Caserio says 'philosophical differences' led to David Culley firing

David Culley led a talent-deficient Houston Texans roster to a 4-13 record in his first year as head coach, but apparently that wasn't enough as he was fired Thursday

Texans general manager Nick Caserio explained the dismissal Thursday night, saying he and Culley had different visions for the future of the franchise.

"I came to this difficult but necessary decision after reviewing our football operation," Caserio said in a statement. "While a change after one season is unusual, we had philosophical differences over the long-term direction and vision for our program moving forward."

Where exactly their philosophies clashed wasn't explained, but Texans owner Cal McNair said in a statement he has "complete confidence" in Caserio's decisions and "Nick believed it was necessary for the future of our organization."

Caserio, 46, was hired as general manager in January 2021 after 20 years in the New England Patriots organization. He was reportedly significantly involved in Culley's coaching of the team.

The Texans finished with the fewest yards on offense in the NFL and the second most yards allowed on defense.
