Analyst Believes in Atlanta Falcons Michael Penix Downfield Throwing
Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

One of the most shocking picks in the NFL was the Atlanta Falcons selecting Michael Penix in the Top 10. What might Penix thrive at in the next five years?

The Atlanta Falcons shocked the NFL when they used the 8th overall pick on Penix out of Washington. This offseason, the Falcons looked like they had addressed the quarterback position when they signed Kirk Cousins. However, they double-dipped at the position with their first-round pick.

Penix was a very interesting prospect coming out of college, as he had an excellent career at Washington, but was banged up when he was at Indiana. While injuries are certainly a concern, Penix can light it up through the air.

Recently, ESPN spoke about what area Penix might thrive in. Here’s what they had to say.

The area he could lead the league in five years: Completions on throws at least 20 yards downfield. Penix was exceptionally accurate in those third-level areas at Washington, completing a nation-leading 46 throws of 20-plus air yards during his final college season. Compared to other top picks, Penix is walking into what might be a favorable situation. Even though Cousins and his camp might not have been thrilled that the team drafted him, Penix will have the ability to sit and learn behind a good NFL quarterback.

In addition to getting the chance to sit and not be rushed into the starting spot, the Falcons have also done a good job in recent years adding young talent to their offense. Over the last three years, they have used top-10 picks on Drake London, Bijan Robinson, and Kyle Pitts.

While Penix won’t be asked to start in Week 1 this season, he should be prepared and in a good position to succeed when the time comes. As a quarterback, Penix is excellent at throwing the ball down the field, and in the dome with some good weapons, he can continue that at the next level.
