Analyst blasts Commanders following WR Terry McLaurin's trade request

The Washington Commanders were one of the biggest surprises in the NFL last season with rookie QB Jayden Daniels leading the franchise to the NFC Championship game.

The Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles proved to be too much in a 55-23 win, but the season was still a success for a franchise that had not won a playoff game since 2005.

Another key contributor to Washington's success was WR Terry McLaurin, who led the team in receiving yards (1,096) and TDs (13). Despite the success that McLaurin has had, he has not agreed to a new deal with the Commanders and recently requested a trade.

ESPN NFL analyst Dan Orlovsky was on Monday's edition of "First Take" and blasted the organization for the way it has handled the entire situation.

"This is one of the dumbest things that has been a part of the NFL this offseason. It's one of the most maddening situations that I have been watching this NFL offseason," Orlovsky said. "...Respectfully Washington, you were a dumpster fire for years. You were a laughing stock. The only thing good about your organization was (Terry McLaurin)."

Orlovsky did not stop there, as he went on to discuss McLaurin's importance to the team and how he impacts winning as much as any other receiver in the NFL.

"You need him. Give me receivers that impact winning, impact winning as much, if not more, than Terry McLaurin. I'll give you like (Cincinnati Bengals WR) Ja'Marr (Chase), (Minnesota Vikings WR) Justin (Jefferson), (Detroit Lions WR) Amon-Ra St. Brown. He impacts winning," Orlovsky said. "This is a team that had six fourth-quarter comebacks, was ridiculous on fourth down. What are we doing in Washington? You finally have some good and you finally have hope for the future and you're trying to take away the one thing in your organization that, before Jayden (Daniels) and his group got there, was good. It makes no sense."

McLaurin has been sensational during his two seasons with the Commanders, eclipsing 1,000 receiving yards every season since his rookie campaign. He has 38 career TD receptions and an average of 13.9 yards per reception.

Recent reports suggest that McLaurin will remain with the Commanders despite the drama between the two sides, proving this could just be another example of a contract dispute that eventually culminates with a new deal before the start of the season.

This comes as Cincinnati Bengals star pass-rusher Trey Hendrickson finally reported to training camp on July 30 as he remains in a contract stalemate leading up to the 2025 season. Dallas Cowboys DE Micah Parsons also requested a trade as he grows impatient about signing a new deal, which may not come anytime soon.

Given the success that Washington had in Year 1 under Daniels, it would be shocking if it did not sign its star receiver to a new deal and build off an encouraging 2024 season for the entire organization.
