Analyst names Broncos as unexpected trade candidate for QB

Since Russell Wilson's first season in Denver fell short of expectations, the idea that it needs a fallback plan at quarterback keeps gaining momentum.

Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports believes the Broncos should enter the trade market and inquire about New England's Mac Jones.

"New coach Sean Payton has already hinted that new No. 2 Jarrett Stidham is a candidate for future starting reps," wrote Benjamin. "Why wouldn't he unturn every stone as he looks to revive the franchise, especially considering he was admittedly high on Jones as a prospect while coaching the Saints?"

Jones could have some untapped potential. He made the Pro Bowl during his rookie season and posted the eighth-highest completion percentage (67.6) in the NFL.

Last season, the 24-year-old QB regressed when Matt Patricia assumed the offensive coordinator role despite holding no experience as an offensive play caller.

In 14 games, he only threw 14 TDs and posted a 36.1 QBR, 28th in the NFL. That stat line was worse than Wilson, who threw 16 TDs and registered a 36.7 QBR in 15 games.

Jones grew so frustrated with New England that he reportedly went behind Patriots head coach Bill Belichick's back and sought advice from his college coaches at Alabama.

The Broncos should pass on this proposal. Jones has not proved he's a player who can transform a franchise, and he might be too temperamental for Payton because he and Belichick are cut of similar cloth when it comes to controlling football operations.

Also, Denver dealt two draft picks for Payton because it felt his offensive wizardry would rejuvenate Wilson, recapturing his nine-time Pro Bowl form.
