As the Pittsburgh Steelers continue to address depth issues in the quarterback room, the team continues to wait for an answer from free agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers, a four-time league MVP and future Hall of Famer, has been rumored to play in Pittsburgh for a number of weeks now as speculation continues to grow around the league. Entering what is more than likely his final season, Rodgers is a player that is far past his prime, but could still add some major firepower to an underwhelming Pittsburgh offensive unit.
With the Steelers' current quarterback room consisting of Mason Rudolph, Skylar Thompson and rookie Will Howard, Pittsburgh is widely expected to pursue a veteran arm in either free agency, or the trade market. With Rodgers yet to make a decision and Organized Team Activities (OTAs) scheduled to start this week, Steelers fans all around the world have taken to social media to express their growing frustration and concern with both Rodgers and the team's current quarterback room.
As the Steelers continue to search for an answer at quarterback, NFL analyst Chris Brockman weighed in on the Rodgers situation.
"I just don't understand why they are putting up with this," Brockton stated. "Aaron Rodgers is suddenly just going to flip a switch? He's obviously thinking about everything except for football right now. And I understand that he has personal and family issues, but that was only a small part of his conversation with Joe Rogan. So do you really think he's just going to flip a switch in June?"
Following his recent appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, many fans expressed opinions similar to Brockman's, as Rodgers made it clear that his current priorities were elsewhere and not on the football field. Currently entering his 21st season, Rodgers spent the past two seasons with the New York Jets in what was a failed experiment for all involved. After suffering a season ending injury on the first drive of the year in 2023, Rodgers had an underwhelming 2024 campaign after what many thought would be his final season in the NFL.
Despite the down year, Rodgers would still add a much needed veteran presence to the Steelers' quarterback room in 2025, and would be an excellent mentor for Howard. Howard, who was drafted in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft out of Ohio State, is a promising rookie that will have a chance to make a major impact on the Steelers' offense in the future.
After trading star wide receiver George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a third round pick and late-round pick swap, the Steelers find themselves with no reliable wide receiver depth outside of DK Metcalf. Metcalf, who was acquired in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks earlier in the offseason, is expected to play a major role on the Steelers' offense in 2025. As the team continues the search for a veteran quarterback, the Steelers may benefit from signing a true wide receiver two (WR2) as well.
With many big names still available in free agency, the Steelers may turn to former Buffalo Bills receiver Amari Cooper as a cheaper WR2 option. Cooper, who was traded from the Cleveland Browns to the Bills last season, would be an elite option behind Metcalf and could prove to be an absolute game changer on offense. While multiple receivers remain available on the market, the Steelers may turn to the talent that is already on the roster as well, as both Calvin Austin lll and Roman Wilson continue to turn heads throughout the offseason.
As the Steelers continue to wait for an answer from Rodgers, the team remains hopeful that the future Hall of Fame quarterback will sign sooner rather than later. With OTAs starting this week, Head Coach Mike Tomlin and his staff will be able to get a better understanding of where both the quarterback and wide receiver rooms currently stand. As the start of training camp continues to inch closer, fans should keep an eye on both Pittsburgh's quarterback and wide receiver rooms moving forward.
