Analysts Float Big Rams Trade Rumors, ‘Could Be Jalen Ramsey 2.0’

The Los Angeles Rams entered the 2025 season with a bold bet: sticking with the same defensive backs who helped fuel their playoff push last year. While the unit has delivered flashes of quality — tied for ninth in the NFL in passing yards allowed per game — cracks are beginning to show. Emmanuel Forbes Jr., in particular, has struggled. His coverage grade of 30.1 in Week 4 highlighted a string of lapses, allowing three receptions for 86 yards and a touchdown.

With Ahkello Witherspoon sidelined by a broken clavicle, the depth behind Forbes is thin, leaving the Rams reliant on Cobie Durant and Darious Williams to stabilize the cornerback rotation.

On The Read Optional Podcast, hosts Oliver Connolly and Jon Ledyard floated a bold idea: the Rams making a play for New York Jets star cornerback Sauce Gardner. Connolly noted that while they won’t be chasing a “Brownlee trade,” Los Angeles has a track record of “big game hunting.”

“I was going through today thinking, okay, who could they go get? Just go try and get Sauce. Could you do that?” Connolly said. He framed it as a potential “Ramsey 2.0” move — referencing LA’s blockbuster 2019 trade for Jalen Ramsey that transformed their secondary.

A Strange Fit in New York?

Ledyard added that the Jets’ defensive scheme under Aaron Glenn has been a “complete disaster,” arguing the fit between Gardner and the staff “just feels like a strange marriage.” He suggested the Jets, off to a miserable start, might eventually consider reshaping their roster. “They’re going to be maybe the worst team in the league this season. So people are going to get moved,” Ledyard said.

Gardner, who signed a massive extension through 2030, is one of the league’s premier young corners. But as Connolly pointed out, a player of his caliber might not want to be part of “another three-year rebuild project” when an opportunity to join Sean McVay and Puka Nacua in Los Angeles could arise.

Will LA Make The Move?

For now, the Rams are trying to weather injuries and growing pains in their secondary. Still, the speculation highlights a central truth: Los Angeles is unlikely to settle if the boundary corner spot remains a weakness. As Connolly and Ledyard noted, LAs DNA leans toward splashy solutions — and Gardner would certainly fit the bill.
