And just like that – Sean Payton jumps back to frontrunner for this NFC team
Andrew Wevers-USA TODAY Sports

Sean Payton has re-emerged as the frontrunner to take over as head coach for the Arizona Cardinals this fall.

Of course, this means almost nothing considering the back-and-forth action we have seen over the past few weeks.

Names such as Brian Flores, Dan Quinn, DeMeco Ryans, and Vance Joseph have all seen their fair share of time spent at the top of the betting odds.

However, as time passes, the pool of coaches has dwindled down to only a handful of select names.

With Dan Quinn staying put with the Cowboys, DeMeco Ryans eyeing the Texans, and talks of Vance Joseph diminishing, there are only a couple of possibilities that remain.

And with the decision most likely coming within the next week or so, all eyes are on the recent interview that owner Michael Bidwill held with Super Bowl winning coach Sean Payton.

A seven-hour discussion, to be precise.

Following the interview, NFL insider Ian Rapoport went on the Pat McAfee show to speak about the possibility of Payton heading to Arizona.

According to Rapoport:

“Obviously not in play in Carolina, in Houston there is no second interview scheduled and it does not feel like there is any momentum there. So that’s two down. Arizona he was at yesterday, sounds like that went well, and as of right now, it sounds like that is a possibility and still in play.

If anything, it seems like Payton has condensed his choices down to three options. Either he becomes the next head coach for the Cardinals, heads to the Broncos, or stays with FOX.

Stay tuned for more updates, as Michael Bidwill could very well finalize a deal in the next couple of days.
