It’s no secret that the Kansas City Chiefs are in a tough spot when it comes to trying to keep the dynasty going. Winning three Super Bowls in six years, with two other appearances, isn’t easy, and it can drain your franchise. But if there’s any team that could keep this thing going, it’s KC.
It’s not easy, though. There are a ton of roadblocks in the way. The Chiefs only have six draft picks in the 2026 NFL Draft. On top of that, they have little to no cap space. When free agency comes after the NFL Combine, the Chiefs will find themselves in a strenuous situation.
“It’s all pieces to a puzzle here, so you go through, and you evaluate that and see where you can spend (and) what’s out there. Free agency is a little bit of a different animal, and how you handle it,” Reid said earlier this week. “We’ll see how things go. We’re sorting through all of that as we go. As you know, the Combine ends up being an area where people talk, and you’ve got agents, coaches (and) GMs, everybody together.
“People have a tendency to – you hear things and people talk, and you keep your ears open and your mouth shut and listen and see what’s going on. Until the new league year starts, nobody can really dig in on it and go. People like to talk in this league, that’s why you’re making a living at it right (chuckles), that’s how it goes.”
Asked today how he would evaluate a reunion with free-agent WR Tyreek Hill, Andy Reid told reporters: “I don’t even know if Tyreek (Hill) is healthy right now to do anything. I’m sure he’s (Tyreek Hill) working hard on that part of it (and) trying to get all that straightened… pic.twitter.com/ZOepWcTRDh

The Chiefs are closer to the cap, but Patrick Mahomes agreed to restructure his contract, freeing $45 million in cap space and dropping his cap hit this season from $78.2 million to $34.65 million. Other contracts may be restructured as well.
Cutting offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor and defensive end Mike Danna would free about $29 million, giving the Chiefs around $19 million in cap space. Linebacker Drue Tranquill and tight end Noah Gray could also be released, though they are less likely.
Making all these moves won’t solve their issues immediately. They will still face restrictions on additional moves, and their depth could take a hit. With the combine approaching and free agency soon after, the Chiefs need to act quickly.
