Patrick Mahomes' season has come to an end.

Mahomes suffered a torn ACL and LCL with the Kansas City Chiefs and is already working through post-surgery rehab.

The Chiefs thrust backup Gardner Minshew into the starting lineup when Mahomes suffered the injury. In his first start on Sunday, a 26-9 loss to the Tennessee Titans, Minshew suffered a knee injury of his own.

With Minshew out of the lineup, the Chiefs were forced to turn to quarterback Chris Oladokun to lead the offense. He was recently elevated from the practice squad after the injury to Mahomes to serve as Minshew's backup.

On Monday, the Kansas City Chiefs made an important move for their quarterback room.

After having just one active quarterback with Oladokun, the Chiefs agreed to a deal with former Buffalo Bills quarterback Shane Buechele.

Buechele passed his physical, making his signing with the Chiefs official before Kansas City plays its final two games of the regular season.

Buechele was a member of the Kansas City Chiefs from 2021 to 2022. He earned a Super Bowl ring with the Chiefs for their Super Bowl LVII championship. The former Texas Longhorns and SMU Mustangs quarterback then joined the Buffalo Bills in 2023.

The Chiefs signed Buechele off the Bills' practice squad, where the former Texas star has spent the 2025 season. Buechele has never thrown a pass in a regular-season NFL game.

The Chiefs will have Buechele and Oladokun rostered for their final two games of the season. They are set to host the Denver Broncos at 8:15 p.m. ET on Thursday, which is Christmas Day, on Amazon Prime Video and the Las Vegas Raiders on the road in Week 18.
