Andy Reid may cut a Chiefs draft pick that's run out of chances

At some point, even the Kansas City Chiefs have to throw in the proverbial towel on high draft selections. The Chiefs have had so much team success in the Patrick Mahomes era that it's difficult to make too big of a deal out of failed draft selections.

And frankly, general manager Brett Veach has earned the benefit of the doubt at this point.

But that doesn't mean we won't see some high draft picks on the chopping block for the Chiefs as training camp gets underway for the reigning AFC champions. In fact, it might be past due for one player in particular, who has potentially overstayed his welcome.

That player is 2022 second-round pick Skyy Moore, who simply hasn't been able to capitalize on what appears to be a golden opportunity set before him.

Skyy Moore in danger of being cut heading into Chiefs training camp

The Chiefs just recently locked Skyy Moore's 2022 NFL Draft classmate George Karlaftis into a big-money extension. The decision to extend Karlaftis with Trent McDuffie likely not far behind is indicative of what I mentioned before, which is that Brett Veach has earned the benefit of the doubt in the NFL Draft.

The Chiefs have simply struggled to bring the right guys in at the wide receiver position since the departure of Tyreek Hill in the blockbuster trade with the Dolphins a couple of years ago, and that includes Moore.

In just six games last season, Moore didn't have a single catch. The Chiefs have likely been clinging to the dreaded "potential" with Moore, even though he hasn't shown any real signs of reaching it over the last three seasons. He had a touchdown in the team's 2022 Super Bowl run. He is capable of returning punts and kicks. But as talented as he was coming out of Western Michigan, it just hasn't materialized at the pro level on a consistent basis.

Even with some major question marks at the receiver position this offseason -- a looming suspension for Rashee Rice, assault charges (that were later dropped) for Xavier Worthy, Hollywood Brown's injury history -- there is really no reason for Kansas City to bank on Moore doing much this season.

The Chiefs will give him another look at training camp, but if he doesn't show up in a big way, it's reasonable to expect that Andy Reid is finally going to give him the axe. And the Chiefs would undoubtedly have to watch as Moore catches on with another team, and in those situations, there's always the potential that you're kicking yourself for letting a guy go.

But nobody could make a more informed decision on that than Reid at this point. Either the Chiefs will be okay with Moore reaching his potential elsewhere or they'll continue to let him waste away at the bottom of their depth chart. It's not a great scenario to be in, but the former second-round pick is probably out of second chances at this point.
