Andy Reid not considering retirement: 'If it takes me into my 70s, then let's roll'

Andy Reid will have MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes on his roster for a very, very long time after the QB signed a 10-year deal worth up to $503 million.

The 62-year-old coach, who Mahomes consulted during contract negotiations, isn't prepared to retire any time soon...and could end up coaching Mahomes until his deal is up after the 2031 campaign.

"In the young 70s, huh?" Reid said via a transcript released by the team, according to NFL.com's Kevin Patra. "Listen, I haven't got to that point mentally where I'm thinking about retirement. One of the great things about this job is when you look forward to coming to work and to deal with the players and coaches. I'm lucky enough to be around good players and coaches. This guy here [Mahomes], makes it even better. He has a unique ability with what he does with his teammates. The Honey Badger [Tyrann Mathieu] was part of this too...Both of those two guys make our jobs very enjoyable. I come to work and have two great leaders like that, along with other players who love to play the game. Listen, if it takes me into my 70s, then let's roll. Herbie, doggone it, I'm ready to go."

If Reid sticks around until the end of Mahomes' deal, he'd be 74-years-old. Bill Belichick and Pete Carroll currently are the oldest coaches in the league at 68. Former Bills coach Marv Levy and former Bears coach George Halas both coached until they were 72.

In three years together, two with Mahomes as QB1, the duo has managed a 24-7 regular-season record with a Super Bowl championship coming last season.

Mahomes has flourished under Reid's system, completing nearly 66% of his passes with 76 touchdowns and 18 interceptions during the regular season. This past postseason, Mahomes threw 10 touchdowns and just two interceptions.

Mahomes and Reid are primed to make another run at a title in 2020 with much of last year's squad still intact.

With another Super Bowl win, Reid would join Don Shula, Mike Shanahan, Bill Belichick, Tom Landry, Chuck Noll, Tom Coughlin and Bill Parcels as the only coaches in league history with 175 wins and two Super Bowl titles.

Reid has been a head coach since the 1999 season. He spent 14 years with the Philadelphia Eagles before joining the Chiefs.
