Patrick Mahomes still has a long road back from the unfortunate ACL/LCL tear he suffered in Week 15's loss to the LA Chargers. But head coach Andy Reid had some news on Monday that's sure to be received well by the Chiefs Kingdom.
Kansas City has watched its season fall apart since the Thanksgiving Day loss at Dallas, and that was only compounded with the injury to the team's two-time MVP.
Mahomes has already undergone surgery on the injury and hopes to be back in time for the franchise's season opener in 2026. And it sounds like Andy and the team are already feeling like that could be a possibility.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Reid revealed that Mahomes has remained around the team as the season winds down and is putting in a ton of time on strengthening his knee so that he can get back to 100% as soon as possible.
“He’s in the building working and doing his rehab, spending a lot of hours doing it,” Reid said to start the week. “He’s really attacked that and will continue to do that. He’s around and sees the guys, but most of his time is being spent rehabbing.”
However when it comes to traveling to Vegas for Kansas City's Week 18 finale, it doesn't sound like the three-time Super Bowl champ is quite ready for that just yet. “Probably not. Not this soon, no,” Reid told the media.
Opening up about his relationship with Patrick ahead of this year's Christmas Day game vs. the Broncos, Travis Kelce sat down with fellow Chiefs legend Tony Gonzalez to talk about his extremely close friendship with the superstar QB.
"He's family now," Kelce said. "I think through all the hard work and all the family time that we've had outside the facility and outside the building, there'll definitely never be a goodbye to him, it'll just be like another day in the life with Patty Mahomes."
"What he's been to my career up to this point, you can't measure it. It's all the little things that you see manifest out there onto the field that we're working on every single week, every single offseason. When he came into the league, he took this thing by storm. It's been a fun ride ever since he's been at the helm."
Time will tell if we ever see Mahomes and Kelce take the field together again. But if this was it, what an incredible ride it was.
