Anthony Richardson injury: Shane Steichen gives troubling update on Colts QB

The offseason is in full swing and Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson has quickly run into a speed bump. The former first round pick is dealing with a shoulder injury that’s going to sideline him from mini camp next week.

Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen shared the news of Richardson’s injury. However, no specifics were given beyond that it’s an issue with his shoulder. It’s also unclear how quickly he’ll return following mini camp.

Anthony Richardson is now 23 years old and going into his third NFL season. To this point in it, things have been difficult for Richardson, who is hoping to have a bounce back season in 2025. However, this injury isn’t the start that he was hoping for.

In his rookie season, Richardson was sidelined by an AC joint sprain. That would eventually land him on injured reserve and in need of shoulder surgery. That ended his season but not before he did manage to show some promise. However, he’d follow that up with a difficult second season in the NFL. That included missing time with an oblique injury and later getting benched for taking himself out of a game for a breather.

Over the course of his first two NFL seasons, Richardson has played in 15 games, all of which he started. During that time, he’s completed 50.6 percent of his passes for 2,391 yards and 11 touchdowns to 13 interceptions. He’s also rushed for 635 yards and 10 touchdowns.

The starting job in Indianapolis isn’t a given for Anthony Richardson in 2025. The Colts brought in another former first round pick in Daniel Jones. They also added rookie quarterback Riley Leonard.

This spring, NFL insider Tom Pelissero shared that the Colts were planning on an open quarterback competition. That’s going to be, primarily, between Richardson and Jones. That came after GM Chris Ballard was critical of Richardson’s injury history, saying, “he’s not proven he can play 17 games.” At the time, he emphasized the need to bring in competition to make sure that Indianapolis had a plan in case of injury moving forward.

The Indianapolis Colts are coming off an 8-9 season in 2024 and in two seasons under Shane Steichen, they’re 17-17. The last time the Colts went to the playoffs was in 2020. You’d have to go back to the 2018 season for their last playoff win under head coach Frank Reich.
