Anthony Richardson will take the first snap for the Indianapolis Colts in their preseason opener Thursday. Head coach Shane Steichen confirmed the third-year quarterback will start against the Ravens after missing time earlier this offseason with a shoulder injury.

Richardson sat out part of the team’s quarterback competition during minicamp because of the setback, but returned in time for training camp. Many expected Daniel Jones, who signed with the Colts this offseason, to gain an edge during Richardson’s absence. However, the former Giants quarterback hasn’t pulled away in the battle for QB1.

Preseason Plan for Richardson and Jones

Steichen told reporters Richardson will play about a quarter and a half in the opener, while Jones will take over for the remainder of the first half. The roles will flip next week when the Colts face the Packers.

For now, this is about getting Richardson reps. The Colts invested heavily in him as a first-round pick and want to see progress after two injury-filled seasons. Richardson has missed 19 games in his first two years, including 13 as a rookie. Last season, he completed just 47.7% of his passes and was benched for veteran Joe Flacco, raising concerns about his preparation and consistency.

Jones Brings Experience, But No Separation Yet

Jones signed a one-year, $14 million deal with Indianapolis, which includes $13.15 million guaranteed. That’s starter-level money, but so far, camp reports suggest both quarterbacks have been inconsistent. Neither has clearly outplayed the other, according to ESPN’s Stephen Holder.

The Giants released Jones last season, and he later joined the Vikings’ practice squad. He passed on a free-agency offer to stay in Minnesota because the Colts gave him a better shot to start. At 28, evaluators view Jones as the safer, more stable option compared to the talented but unpredictable Richardson. Still, Richardson’s upside keeps him firmly in the mix.

Competition Likely to Continue Into the Season

The Colts are expected to take their time making a final decision on the Week 1 starter. With preseason matchups against the Ravens and Packers ahead, this competition could last well into the regular season.

“Both guys are neck and neck right now,” The Athletic’s James Boyd reported. For now, Richardson gets the first look — and a chance to prove he’s ready to lead the Colts’ offense.
