The Indianapolis Colts have a quarterback battle on their hands for the rest of training camp and the preseason.
The Colts released their first unofficial depth chart on Monday, and it lists the quarterback position as "Daniel Jones or Anthony Richardson." They have them both as starting quarterbacks until one does enough to be the full-time starter.
Richardson, the former Florida Gators quarterback, is going into his third season with the Colts, but hasn't done enough. Ever since he was picked fourth overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, he has dealt with injuries and inconsistencies. It's why the Colts signed Jones to a one-year contract when free agency opened in March.
Jones has extensive starting experience after spending almost six full seasons with the New York Giants. He played in 70 games, compiling 14,582 yards through the air, 70 touchdowns, and 47 interceptions.
He provides some good competition for Richardson since the Colts didn't want to just give the latter the starting job. They want him to earn it before the regular season starts. The Colts will play the Baltimore Ravens, Green Bay Packers, and Cincinnati Bengals during the preseason.
As for the regular season, the Colts will open the season at home against the Miami Dolphins on September 7. Kickoff will be at 1 p.m. ET.
