Antonio Gibson spotted working with special teams in practice

Washington Commanders running back Antonio Gibson was sent a loud and clear message during Tuesday’s practice. 

Gibson entered training camp as the presumed starter at running back. However, after his fumbling woes continued in Saturday’s preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers, it appears he is in a battle with rookie Brian Robinson Jr.

On Tuesday, Gibson was seen working on protection in the slot on punt returns, according to Sam Fortier of the Washington Post. Special teams coordinator Nate Kaczor prefers running backs in the position because it’s similar to pass protection. Robinson had primarily been in that role throughout training camp.

Gibson also saw work with the third-team offense.

Ron Rivera downplayed the situation after practice. He noted Gibson played first, second and third teams as well as special teams. Robinson had done the same.

“We want to be able to use all of our players,” Rivera said per the Athletic’s Ben Standig.

Rivera was asked if there is a competition for starting running back.

“There’s always been a competition on this team,” Rivera replied.

Last season, Gibson led all non-quarterbacks with six fumbles and four fumbles lost. His fumbling habits continued Saturday against the Panthers. On Washington’s fifth offensive play, Gibson lost a fumble when Panthers linebacker Cory Littleton punched the football free. The Panthers recovered the ball inside the Commanders 20-yard line. Three plays later, the Carolina offense scored a touchdown, extending their lead to 10-0 in the first quarter.

Robinson replaced Gibson at running back to finish the first unit’s time in the game. The rookie had six carries for 26 yards and scored the Commanders’ first touchdown of the game. Meanwhile, Gibson watched from the sideline.

Gibson returned to the game later but with the second offense. He finished with a disappointing two yards on four carries to go along with his lost fumble. With J.D. McKissic cemented as the third-down back, Gibson could see himself battling for a spot for RB3 and on special teams.
