Numerous reports have indicated that Deshaun Watson has a significant lead over Shedeur Sanders in the competition to emerge as the Cleveland Browns' starting quarterback.
The Browns also have Dillon Gabriel and 2026 sixth-round selection Taylen Green in their quarterback room. It appears the odd man out regarding the Browns' depth chart could stun and also anger some members of the Cleveland fan base.
For his latest mailbag, Browns insider Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland/The Land on Demand was asked how long Cleveland plans to keep Gabriel on the roster.
"Let it play out," Grossi responded. "The outcome may surprise you."
This is the second time that Grossi has suggested the Browns could move on from Sanders if the polarizing prospect doesn't defeat Watson for the starting job. Recently, Grossi hinted that Browns head coach Todd Monken may like that "Gabriel is a guy who will keep quiet" and who will "support the starter in any way he can."
"Shedeur, his shadow is just so huge," Grossi said at that time.
"Barring injuries, I would expect all four QBs to stay on the roster until the cut to 53," Grossi added. "I expect Taylen Green will open the season as QB3."
History shows that the often-injured Watson could be one hit or misstep away from going down with a significant setback. Thus, one would think Monken and his staff will want a backup on the roster who can do more than simply fill in at the ends of games.
The Browns clearly want it known they haven't yet given up on Gabriel, which could lead one to believe that Sanders is battling more for a roster spot than the starting job this offseason. One wonders if any other team would offer the Browns anything of note for Sanders if Monken and Co. ultimately view the signal-caller as surplus to requirements.
