Wide receiver Diontae Johnson has recorded just one reception for six yards across appearances in four games since the Baltimore Ravens acquired him. The Carolina Panthers traded him and a 2025 sixth-round draft pick to the Ravens for a 2025 fifth-round pick earlier this fall.
It's now known why he did not play a single snap during Baltimore's 24-19 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles that dropped the Ravens to 8-5 this past Sunday.
"We have made the difficult decision to suspend Diontae Johnson for our upcoming game against the New York Giants for conduct detrimental to the team," Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta said in a short statement released on Wednesday afternoon. "Diontae's suspension stems from refusing to enter our game against the Philadelphia Eagles. We will have no further comments on this matter going forward."
Baltimore is currently in its bye week and doesn't return to action until the Week 15 matchup at the Giants on Dec. 15. Whether or not Johnson will be with the Ravens when they face the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 16 is unknown.
The Steelers made Johnson a third-round draft pick in 2019, and he featured for that organization through last season until he seemingly became no longer worth the trouble. Pittsburgh traded him to Carolina back in March, but Panthers general manager Dan Morgan said shortly after that club shipped Johnson to the Ravens that "we felt at the end of the day that it was best for the team and best for Diontae that we both part ways and get the compensation there that we got."
According to ESPN's Jamison Hensley, the Panthers "picked up most of Johnson's remaining salary" as part of the trade.
Shortly after the Ravens' website posted DeCosta's statement, well-known NFL insider Josina Anderson addressed the news:
With the #Ravens suspending Diontae Johnson one game for conduct detrimental for refusal to enter the the #Eagles game, I'm reminded of the tweet below--

The Ravens have a Most Valuable Player Award candidate in two-time MVP Lamar Jackson and are trying to reach the Super Bowl for the first time with Jackson on the roster. Considering Johnson has offered the club next-to-nothing as an on-field contributor and has already caused a problem during a game, one could assume he's already taken his last meaningful snap with the Ravens and will be available to other teams by Christmas.
