The Steelers have had an uncharacteristically active offseason under new general manager Omar Khan, but does he have one more trick up his sleeve?
That may be the case as Pittsburgh has opened a lot of cap room over the past couple of days. It started with the team cutting CB Ahkello Witherspoon to save $4M in cap space and then yesterday it extended QB Mitchell Trubisky two years.
The extension lowers Trubisky's cap number for 2023. So, the Steelers will save roughly $10M between their two latest moves.
Pittsburgh could also still decide to restructure the contracts of LB T.J. Watt, DT Cameron Heyward and WR Diontae Johnson if it wanted to open even more room.
So, what could the "big move" be?
The Steelers hosted LB Kwon Alexander on a visit on Monday, but it shouldn't cost too much if they were to sign him.
Maybe the cap movement is for a trade. It has been reported that Cardinals safety Budda Baker and Commanders edge rusher Chase Young could be moved by the start of the season.
If Pittsburgh were to trade for one of them, a contract extension would likely follow as each player is probably hoping for a new contract.
However, the move that seems the most realistic at this point of the offseason is an in-house extension for LB Alex Highsmith, who is entering the final year of his rookie deal. Highsmith is deserving after having the sixth-most sacks (14.5) and most forced fumbles (five) in the NFL in 2022.
Of course, nothing major could happen as well but something certainly feels like it's in the works as Khan looks to round out the Steelers' roster for 2023.
