The Arizona Cardinals have expanded their search for a new head coach, adding multiple candidates to an already extensive list as ownership and the front office look to reset the team’s direction following Jonathan Gannon’s dismissal.
Owner Michael Bidwill confirmed that results drove the decision to part ways with Gannon, who won only one game after Week 2 of the season. “We were going in the wrong direction,” Bidwill said. “It came down to wins and losses. We’ve won one game since week two of the NFL season, and it just felt like it had gotten too far, and it was just time to go in a different direction.”
General manager Monti Ossenfort described the process as deliberate and comprehensive. “This is an important decision that Michael and I are going to undertake,” Ossenfort said. “We’re going to be thorough. We’re going to look at a wide range of candidates, and because of the NFL rules about timing of when we can talk to guys still in the playoffs, this is not a process that’s going to be quick.”
Ossenfort added that leadership and player development would guide the team’s choice. “First and foremost, we’re looking for a strong leader,” he said. “There’s being a strong leader, it’s creating accountability and dependability in the locker room, it’s creating advantages on the field, putting our players in a position to be successful, and developing young players.”
Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter has become one of the most in-demand names in the current coaching cycle. NFL insider Albert Breer reported that Minter received interview requests from all eight teams with openings and met with both the Titans and Cardinals on Tuesday. Minter has run one of the league’s most efficient defenses over the past two seasons, ranking fifth in yards allowed per game (285.2) and ninth in points allowed (20). He previously worked under John and Jim Harbaugh in Baltimore, Michigan, and Los Angeles.
The Cardinals’ decision to include Minter among their interviews reflects a wide search that includes offensive and defensive backgrounds. The franchise has spoken with or requested meetings with Vance Joseph, Robert Saleh, Anthony Weaver, Patrick Brown, Raheem Morris, Klint Kubiak, Matt Nagy, Jeff Hafley, Chris Shula, and Mike LaFleur. The team also held a phone call with former Ravens coach John Harbaugh to gauge interest.
Arizona is one of eight NFL franchises pursuing a new head coach this offseason. The organization has emphasized thorough evaluation over speed, marking a contrast to its previous hire three years ago. Bidwill and Ossenfort’s recent comments indicate that the team intends to interview every viable candidate before finalizing its choice.
The outcome will determine more than a staff reshuffle. The next hire will influence how quarterback Kyler Murray and the team’s young roster are developed over the next several seasons. With interviews continuing this week, the Cardinals’ decision will set the course for the franchise’s next phase under Bidwill and Ossenfort.
