Kirk Cousins was signed to a four-year, $180 million contract before the 2024 season, to which he had heavily underperformed, and the Atlanta Falcons had to utilize Michael Penix Jr. for the last three games. The whole signing was an issue, as the Falcons had allegedly tampered with Cousins, and they also chose Penix in the first round of last year's draft.
Cousins has a no-trade clause that is working to his favor, as he can utilize that to his advantage until the Falcons find a trade that the veteran quarterback likes. It is also heavily clear that Cousins does not want to be a backup and believes he is still a starting caliber quarterback in the NFL at 36 years old.
Falcons owner Arthur Blank had come out and said that a trade is in the horizon, and when they can work out the right deal with the right team, then Cousins will be on another roster. The Cousins' experience was not what the Falcons were hoping for when they signed him to the big contract, and they are currently trying to make up for it, either before or after the draft.
There is no lead as to Cousins being traded in the next few weeks before the draft comes around but there should be a high expectation of Cousins being on a different roster by preseason. This whole sage opens up the door for Penix to be the next big thing for the Falcons, and for them to get out of the contract they had put in place for Cousins.
If the Falcons can get back some nice draft compensation for the next few years and continue to build on this young team that they have, this signing will be looked at differently, if something can benefit the Falcons.
