When you spend a top-10 pick in the NFL Draft on a running back, the expectations aren't exactly fair.
That's the case for Ashton Jeanty, who joined the Las Vegas Raiders as the No. 6 overall selection in this year's draft back in April, following one of the most prolific seasons from a running back in college football history. The Boise State star racked up a ridiculous 2,601 yards and 29 touchdowns on the ground on his way to finishing second in the Heisman Trophy voting.
But through the first three weeks of his NFL career, Jeanty had yet to move the needle, struggling to find much running room behind a lackluster Raiders offensive line. Heading into Sunday's home game against the Chicago Bears, Jeanty had managed just 144 rushing yards on 41 carries, averaging 3.1 yards per attempt with just one touchdown. He also hadn't made much of an impact as a receiver out of the backfield, turning his five receptions into a measly six yards through the air.
That all changed Sunday afternoon, as Jeanty broke out with a dominant performance in a narrow defeat against the Bears, turning 23 touches into 155 yards of total offense, including a hat trick of touchdowns.
Jeanty's first score was a short reception that showed off his ability to make defenders miss in space, getting the Raiders on the board and giving them an early lead late in the first quarter:

Then came the big one we've all been waiting for, as Jeanty broke off a 64-yard touchdown run that looked like he was back in the Mountain West Conference:

Topping it off was another touchdown catch that looked eerily similar to the first one, as Jeanty took a quick check-down throw from quarterback Geno Smith and shook loose from his defender before getting into the end zone:

Sure, it's only one game, and sure, it was against a Bears defense that isn't exactly among the NFL's best. But this kind of performance has to be a refreshing reminder of what Jeanty is capable of as a three-down playmaker.
The Raiders' new management invited plenty of criticism by spending such a high pick on a position that has been devalued to a large degree across the league in recent years, but Jeanty was also a slam-dunk prospect who checked every box from a physical, mental and intangible perspective heading into this year's draft. Those are the players that every franchise wants to build around, regardless of position.
We'll see how often we see this version of Jeanty this season, especially as the Raiders continue to navigate injuries up front and go up against tougher opponents with better defenses. But this flash of Jeanty's elite potential had to be a relief to the Raiders (and anyone who drafted Jeanty early in their fantasy football leagues) after such a slow start.
