There was no Lions' draft pick that was more exciting in the moment than Ahmed Hassanein. From telling Dan Campbell that he would die for him to getting engaged moments after the announcement on TV, this guy was exciting. Plus, his story to get to this point is probably going to be a Disney movie at some point.
All the excitement has everyone wrapped up to the point where we sort of forget that Hassanein is still relatively new to the game of football. Don't get me wrong, I personally expect big things from home, and I think the Lions do too. But there are some things he needs to work on.
Lions assistant GM Ray Agnew spoke to local media ahead of rookie mini-camp on Friday, and he laid out some of those things.
"I just need to see some growth. It'll be some growing pains on this level, because you got pretty good football players on this level. Just see him as he get taught, you know more tools in his tool belt as far as a pass rusher. Using his hands better, learning when to rush with leverage, learning when you got the sweet spot and turn the corner. So, just learning some nuances of the game."
That's all to be expected. From what we've seen from Hassanein, he's just an athlete who just takes to the game really well. He's shown to be a really solid edge rusher, and you get the feeling that once he adds more time to his game and picks up those nuances, the sky is the limit for him.
I don't believe that at this time the Lions are going to wait on him to learn those things before they start using him. He should be part of the rotation immediately, and I still stick to my prediction that he's starting opposite Hutchinson by Week 5.
