The Falcons had a few surprising cuts when they announced their initial 53-man roster on Sunday, but most of the names fans hoped to see have been added to the team’s practice squad.
Several of these players could end up seeing the field on Sundays at some point this season.
Running backs Tyler Goodson and Cash Jones both made the practice squad, and with only two players at the position on the active roster, all it takes is one injury for either to be thrust into a significant role.
Wide receiver is another area where the Falcons are currently thin, rostering only five players. And the defensive line continues to be churned leading up to Week 1, as Atlanta announced the shocking decision Monday to release Zach Harrison. That could open opportunities for players like Cam Sample, Vinny Anthony II, Dylan Drummond, and Carlos Allen Jr.
Cornerback Darnay Holmes received a lot of run with the ones throughout training camp and the preseason, and Cobee Bryant is a familiar face who appeared in seven games for the Falcons last season.
When rosters are trimmed to 53 across the league, it’s a brutal day for a lot of young men’s dreams. But this is just the start of a constantly evolving process. The Falcons don’t have many position groups where they’re flush with talent, which will open up opportunities for all 15 of these guys if they impress throughout the season.
Each team is allowed 16 players on the practice squad, so the Falcons currently have one extra spot to fill. During the season, Atlanta will be allowed two practice squad elevations per game, and each player can only be elevated three times before he must be added to the active roster.
