Jayden Daniels dragged the Washington Commanders from obscurity to the final four last season. One experienced teammate believes he's seen enough from the quarterback this offseason to suggest more is on the way.
And that's a scary thought for the entire league.
Daniels is a superstar. Everyone knew this was a likely outcome — it just happened quicker than expected. He put together one of the league's greatest-ever rookie seasons for a quarterback. And this is just the start of what promises to be a profitable future for the player and the franchise.
The former LSU sensation isn't one to revel in his previous accomplishments. Daniels' mentality and work ethic are always focused on the next challenge and nothing more. Adam Peters did his part this spring, surrounding the signal-caller with a much-improved supporting cast to take the next step.
Austin Ekeler sees the vision. The running back lauded the growth being displayed by Daniels entering Year 2. He believes that with the playmakers available, the Commanders' offense is going to be extremely powerful once wide receiver Terry McLaurin resolves his contract standoff at some stage this offseason.
He's starting to get more comfortable, which allows him to even play mentally faster and make better decisions. I think there's going to be even more growth this year, which is awesome because of where we're at with our team. We've got a lot of players back. Still have a lot of playmakers. Gotta get Terry [McLaurin] paid. And then, man, we're going to be able to look like a powerhouse out there.Austin Ekeler via CBS Sports
This is an ominous warning to Washington's rivals. Daniels was almost impossible to stop last season. If the Heisman Trophy winner brings his game on even more, he'll be firmly in the NFL MVP conversation when it's all said and done.
The Commanders will only go as far as Daniels takes them. Peters did a tremendous job of putting the right pieces in place. Not having stud right guard Sam Cosmi is going to hurt, but all signs are pointing up aside from that. And if the dynamic signal-caller is capable of what Ekeler believes he is, the sky's the limit.
Daniels has the tools for legitimate greatness. Ekeler will have a part to play as Washington's primary pass-catching option out of the backfield. If everyone else meets expectations and complacency doesn't creep into the process, one can anticipate another bold playoff bid from the Commanders next season.
Washington's football franchise took a seismic shift under the new regime. And with Daniels leading the charge, it's only the beginning.
