When the season kicked off, the Buffalo Bills were the favored bet from those who had done their research, and now, following their excellent start to the campaign, it appears that Sean McDermott’s side is a genuine Super Bowl title contender.

The Bills lurched into the new year with a poor opening weekend display against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but the way they have rebounded from that defeat is a testament to just how much they may still achieve this year.

Their run of four wins has been rampant, to say the least. The way they thumped both the Miami Dolphins (35-0) and the Houston Texans (40-0) to 0, as well as their comfortable win over Washington (43-21), showed they had promise, but it was the way they overcame Patrick Mahomes and Kansas City that proved to any doubters that they are indeed the real deal.

The Bills were, of course, in their pomp during their four-straight Super Bowl-winning run in the 90s but haven’t gotten close to those heights ever since. With McDermott at the helm, they are at least moving in the right direction, and the Bills look as if they may have a part to play in the 2022 NFL schedule, with a spot in the postseason looking like an increasing possibility.

Josh Allen is, of course, a big part of the reason that Buffalo fans can dream of another Super Bowl triumph, the 25-year-old having started the season very brightly with 12 passing TDs under his belt thus far.

However, it’s McDermott’s defense that should be circled for the highest praise; their 64 points conceded being by some distance the lowest in the league (the next lowest coming in the form of the 87 registered by the Carolina Panthers).

McDermott was optimistic, if guarded, after that win over Kansas, stating of their high-ranking opponents:

“I think more than anything, it’s a step in the right direction,” McDermott added. “They’re a good football team. You know, we’re trying to continue to grow and become a good football team. To see the contributions that were made from everyone, in particular, a couple of the young players in that game that are new to our team this year that we acquired via the draft, is a good sign. It doesn’t mean we’re where we need to be, right? But it is a good sign at this early stage of the season.”

That sense of playing down expectations may well be something that’s drummed into his players, with Josh Allen also not looking to get too excited about that win over Kansas;

“It’s one game, and we’re not going to try to make this a bigger deal than what it needs to be,” Allen said

“If we lost this game, we wouldn’t have made it a bigger deal than it needed to be. Again, there’s a whole lot of football left in this season, and we’ve got to continue to stack wins.”

Indeed, that’s a solid mentality, and if the Bills continue to do the simple things right, namely stopping the opposition from playing, then Allen is there to polish things off at the other end.

The AFC East title shoe-ins could well be about to move a step closer to a new era of success.
