There are two ways to look at the stunning manner in which the Buccaneers and quarterback Baker Mayfield have raced out to a 3-0 start this season after their 29-27 win over the Jets. In all three of his team's wins, Mayfield has pulled out a last-possession rally, making the Bucs not only ranked among the best teams in the league in terms of record, but also in terms of adrenaline production.
Of course, the other way to look at all of this is through the lens of the Buccaneers themselves and why, exactly, they have so much trouble putting away opponents?
Tampa needed a late-game touchdown drive and a missed Falcons field goal to beat Atlanta in Week 1, the same Falcons team that got drubbed this week by Carolina. They needed an 80-yard touchdown drive in the final two minutes to get past the 0-3 Texans in Week 2.
And against the Jets and backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor on Sunday, the Bucs needed a 48-yard drive to set up a game-winning field goal after the team had a field-goal try that was blocked and returned for a touchdown.
Before the blocked field goal, it appeared that Mayfield would have carried the day by literally carrying the ball. Mayfield had 233 yards passing and a touchdown, but on a second-and-7 play from his own 38-yard line, Mayfield took off after tight coverage from the Jets, and scampered 33 yards to set up what figured to be the game-sealing score.
Mayfield, coach Todd Bowles knows, has a knack for that kind of excitement.
"He has a good feel for the game," Bowles said. "He has a good feel for coverages being run, when they have their backs turned, and when the pressure is hard outside or hard inside. He has a feel for that. You can't teach that type of thing."
But then, as has happened all too often for Tampa Bay, things tightened up at the end.
Will McDonald leapt and blocked Chase McLaughlin's field-goal try from the 25-yard line with Tampa leading, 26-20, and 1:49 to play. McDonald picked up the ball at the 50-yard line and ran it in for the touchdown and the 27-26 Jets lead.
Bowles was asked his viewpoint on the play after the game. "My thoughts were, excuse my language but, 'You gotta be (expletive) (expletive)-ing me'," he said.
Mayfield did pull the game from the fire for the Buccaneers, who are 3-0 with a remarkable six-point total scoring margin. Things won't get easier for the Buccaneers, who next play the Eagles. Philly is also 3-0 and has won some close ones, with a 14-point scoring margin in their favor.
