Baker Mayfield’s comments hint Buccaneers’ latest offensive line injury loss won’t faze him

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield has been dealt another massive blow to his offensive line after right guard Cody Mauch suffered a potential season-ending knee injury.

Last season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had a top-five offensive line that protected Baker Mayfield brilliantly and allowed for a devastating run game.

However, after All-Pro left tackle Tristan Wirfs had offseason knee surgery, it all started going slowly downhill, with the line now without three of their starters from last year.

Wirfs returned to practice last week, but his return timeline is considered similar to Chris Godwin’s. ESPN insider Adam Schefter said Godwin is not expected to play until October.

Starting right tackle Luke Goedeke reaggravated a foot injury sustained in Week 1 in the Week 2 win over the Houston Texans, while RG Mauch is expected to have knee surgery, which will end his season.

Baker Mayfield isn’t concerned about Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive line injuries

Tristan Wirfs’ absence had already resulted in a big shuffle for the Buccaneers’ offensive line. Center Graham Barton moved to left tackle, starting left guard Ben Bredeson moved to center, and newcomer Mike Jordan has stepped in at left guard.

Remarkably, Cody Mauch finished the game against the Houston Texans while playing injured, but it is now thought he will need surgery, as per ESPN.

With Goedeke’s status for Week 3 unknown, and the Bucs reportedly signing Dan Feeney off the Buffalo Bills practice squad, it is unclear what line will start against the New York Jets. Mayfield isn’t worried, though.

Speaking with the media before Mauch’s report from ESPN came out, Mayfield said: The playbook’s fully open now when it comes to the game plan stuff, when you’re taking your shots, different things like that.

“You’ve got to know who’s on the field for the defense and when you’re trying to time this up. But yeah, by Sunday, whoever’s out there, they’ll be ready. That’s the big part about this offense.

“Next man up, throwing them in there, and really getting them ready for it. And overcommunicating, like I’ve continued to talk to you guys about, and being on the same page, and go play ball from there.”

Expletive response to C.J. Gardner-Johnson incident sums up Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Baker Mayfield is a colorful character at the worst of times, and it is clear why the Tampa Bay Buccaneers team rallies around him.

Despite the Buccaneers’ mounting injury issues, he has had a strong start to the year with five passing touchdowns over the first two games.

There was an incident on the field against the Houston Texans involving C.J. Gardner-Johnson, where he and Mayfield had a heated interaction.

Here’s what Mayfield said on the matter: “We don’t take any s—. That’s about it.” The jabs continued on social media, too, but it appears the former Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl champion won that one.

In response to Mayfield’s post on Instagram saying, ‘Built different. 10 toes down,’ accompanied by a picture of their on-field interaction, the safety responded: “Boy this cute, but still ringless.”

Regardless of social media interactions, Mayfield’s response to the media shows one thing: the Buccaneers aren’t here to make up the numbers.
