Baltimore Ravens: Bolster Pass Rush, Sign Yannick Ngakoue

The Baltimore Ravens sign 29-year-old Yannick Ngakoue onto their practice squad, reuniting with the Maryland native. The veteran edge rusher gives them depth in their pass-rushing unit, as he was last on the team in 2020. He has 69 career NFL sacks and the journeyman has been on multiple teams, including the Ravens. Baltimore’s pass rush has been solid so far, with 10 sacks in 2024. This would give them more experience next to Kyle Van Noy. Their group has young contributors like Odafe Oweh and David Ojabo, ranking 9th in team total sacks this season.

Baltimore Ravens Bring Back a Familiar Face

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Ngakoue joins the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad before their Week 4 Sunday Night Football Matchup against the 3-0 Buffalo Bills. The 1-2 Ravens just got on the board in an embarrassing nail-biter against the 1-2 Dallas Cowboys in Week 3. While it was great to see their first win against a good team, another double-digit lead in the 4th quarter was almost lost.

Veteran edge rusher Van Noy is leading the Ravens in sacks with 4, mostly against the Cowboys. Oweh has also had a good start to the year as a starter on the opposite side, with 2.5 sacks, along with Ojabo with 1. Defensive lineman Nnambi Madubuike, nose tackle Michael Pierce, and middle linebacker Trenton Simpson each have 0.5 sacks on the year as well.

Veteran Yannick Ngakoue Signs On Practice Squad

Now on the Baltimore Ravens, the veteran was playing out of position in Wink Martindale’s scheme back in 2020. Ngakoue last spent time with the Chicago Bears in 2023, the Indianapolis Colts in 2022, and the Las Vegas Raiders in 2021 after he left Baltimore.

The Ravens’ edge rusher had his best seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2016 to 2019, with double-digit sacks in 2017 with 12. In 2020, before he was traded to the Ravens, Ngakou was on the Minnesota Vikings. Now the Maryland native rejoins a team that has playoff and Super Bowl aspirations this season.

Final Thoughts on the New Signing at Edge

While Yannick Ngakoue will likely not be an immediate playmaker for the Baltimore Ravens, it doesn’t hurt to add depth to the pass rush room. Now in Zach Orr’s defensive scheme, he may be used better than how he was being used a few seasons ago.

A career revitalization could happen for Ngakoue in 2024 for Baltimore, as the Ravens secondary has been a massive weakness so far. Adding an experienced pass rusher and a fresh body could be a key to remedy that situation if the other edge rushers struggle at times.
