Bears agree to terms on a deal that will reunite a big bodied target with offensive coordinator Shane Waldron
Orlando Ramirez-USA TODAY Sports

After splashing on running back D'Andre Swift on the first day the legal tampering period began, the Chicago Bears are expected to make another offensive signing.

According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler , the Bears are expected to sign tight end Gerald Everett off the free agent market.

Adam Schefter added that the deal will be a 2-year, $12 million contract that will be worth up to $14 million. The deal will also include $6.1 million in guarantees.

Everett will now be joining the Bears' tight end room that already features Cole Kmet, who's coming off a career-high 719 receiving yards. Everett is coming off a 51 reception season and has scored 11 touchdowns over the last three seasons.

The 29-year-old tight end spent the last two seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers and was with the Seattle Seahawks during the 2021 season. The Bears' new offensive coordinator Shane Waldron served the same role with the Seahawks from 2021-2022 and crossed paths with Everett for one season. In that season, Everett had 63 receptions, 478 receiving yards and a career-high four receiving touchdowns.

Waldron also served as Everett's tight end coach / passing game coordinator during the first four years of his career with the Los Angeles Rams. Everett had 127 receptions, 1,389 receiving yards and 8 touchdowns during his tenure with the Rams.

During the 2023 season, Waldron's offense in Seattle ran the second-highest percentage of 12 personnel formations (one running back, two tight ends, and two receivers) and the tenth-highest percentage of 13 personnel formations (one running back, three tight ends, and one receiver). Adding at least one tight end to the roster along with Kmet seemed like a priority under the team's new offensive system.

Everett played 307 in-line snaps in 2023 compared to Kmet's 519. It'll be interesting to see if both players continue to play in that role or if one will work more primarily in the slot. Under Waldron in Los Angeles, Everett also played considerable snaps out wide and could return to that role in Chicago.

It's a solid contract considering how the tight end market has looked so far this offseason with Waldron landing a player he has a close relationship with.
