After winning their first NFC North title since 2018 last season, the Chicago Bears have built on their success, jumping out to a 5-2 start to the 2026 NFL season. Sitting at second place in the NFC North, the Bears have now won back-to-back games after defeating the New England Patriots 30-24 on Thursday night.

One of the main reasons for the Bears’ 5-2 start has been the success of the running game. Led by running backs De’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai, Chicago leads the NFL with 154.3 rushing yards per game. Unfortunately, Monangai has been sidelined for three consecutive weeks after suffering a toe injury in Week 4 against the New York Jets.

Through four games, Monangai carried the ball 60 times for 324 yards and three touchdowns, averaging a team-high 5.4 yards per carry among running backs. Monangai’s efficiency, combined with Swift’s continued production as the primary option, has provided the Bears with one of the best rushing attacks in franchise history.

The Bears’ 14 rushing touchdowns through the first seven games are the most in franchise history since the 1956 season, when they had 16 touchdowns through seven games.

However, with Monangai missing practice on Tuesday, Chicago made a move to bolster its running back room. The team announced that it promoted running back Zavier Scott from the practice squad to the active roster and released defensive back Nick McCloud.

Head coach Ben Johnson previously indicated that Monangai was not expected to require a stint on injured reserve, suggesting Chicago still views the injury as relatively short-term.

While the move doesn’t necessarily indicate that Monangai has suffered a setback, it does give the Bears another option behind Swift while Monangai continues to work his way back. Chicago will continue monitoring Monangai as they prepare for a Week 8 matchup with the Seattle Seahawks on Monday Night.
