Bears Crush the Offseason—But Will It Finally Lead to Wins?

This offseason, the Bears made significant strides to reshape their future. They hired Ben Johnson, known for his offensive prowess with the Lions, as the new head coach. But the moves didn't stop there, and  PFF recognized the Bears' efforts by giving them the best offseason grade of any team in the NFL.

They fortified the offensive line by acquiring Joe Thuney, Jonah Jackson, and Drew Dalman to protect their young quarterback, Caleb Williams. These additions to the offensive trenches aim to reduce the staggering 68 sacks Williams endured last season and establish a solid foundation for the offense.

An improved offensive line's impact on the rushing attack is potentially more critical. Last season, the Bears ranked 30th in yards per rush and 15th in PFF run blocking grade. Their rushing attack was extremely bipolar, with a decent amount of explosive plays but a severe lack of consistency. The ability to run the football well out of various alignments, formations, and personnel groupings inherently adds value to the passing attack. It makes pass protection easier as defenses gear up to stop the run. PFF also noted that the Bears' aggressive strategy in the trenches allowed them to take the best players available at each draft slot.

"That allowed them to take a “best player available” approach in the draft, which yielded Colston Loveland, Luther Burden III and Ozzy Trapilo, among others."

Those three picks, as well as Shemar Turner, should immediately contribute to the Bears' roster this season and bolster the team's overall performance. Pro Football Focus recognized the Bears' efforts, awarding them an A+ for their offseason activities, highlighting the team's commitment to building a competitive roster. The Bears were the only team graded to receive an A+, putting them at the front of the pack.

We have heard this before, though. Just last season, PFF gave the Bears an A for the additions of Keenan Allen, Kevin Byard, D'Andre Swift, and their rookie class. Two years ago, the Bears received an A-grade for trading the number one overall pick and signing Tremaine Edmunds and T.J. Edwards. The Bears have a habit of being off-season champions in recent years, and it has yet to result in wins. Maybe Ben Johnson can change that.
