Bears GM: 'We believe in Mitch' Trubisky ... despite option decline

It seemsr odd for Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Pace to say he believes in Mitchell Trubisky after declining the quarterback's fifth-year option, but that's where we're at.

While the Bears declined Trubisky's option, that doesn't mean Chicago won't sign him when his current deal is up, and that's what Pace indicated.

"We’ve always had the approach that we’re honest and we’re truthful with our players and our staff, and we move on and we get to work. …" Pace said on "Bears All-Access," the team-sponsored radio show on WSCR-AM, according to the Chicago Sun Times' Patrick Finley. "Mitch gets it. Everyone’s competing. Everyone’s focused on better results. That’s the entire team. That starts with me and everybody.

"We believe in Mitch — that doesn’t change. … "I think you can point to (cornerback) Kyle Fuller as a great example of a player that didn’t get his option exercised. I think we would say it worked out well for him and for us."

The Bears traded for Nick Foles earlier in the offseason, and he'll compete with Trubisky for the starting job. So if Trubisky, 25, can't handle things, then it's likely we'll see Foles step in and take over Chicago's offense. Trubisky went 8-7 last season with 3,138 yards, 17 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while completing 63.2 percent of his passes.

That's not necessarily horrible, but it's not good either.

The Bears are looking for someone to lead the team to a Super Bowl, and Trubisky — the second overall pick of the 2017 draft — so far hasn't shown he's that guy. On the other hand, Foles, 31, has won a Super Bowl title, and knows how difficult things can get throughout the season. While the former Eagle isn't necessarily a long-term solution in Chicago, the Bears can use Foles until they get a shot at a legitimate QB in the NFL Draft.
