Bears Mandatory Minicamp: Darnell Wright adds more fuel to the fire regarding trick plays in Ben Johnson's offense after crazy catch

The Chicago Bears wrapped up the third and final day of mandatory minicamp on Thursday, which is the last day we'll see the full team in action until training camp.

Rookies are scheduled to have three more sessions of organized team activities next week before they begin their extended break as well.

Given it's the final day of minicamp, the new coaching staff decided to let the players have some fun, especially the offensive players who got the better of the defense on Wednesday to conclude practice.

According to Adam Jahns, the Bears were experimenting with some trickery on the field today with offensive linemen catching passes and the pass catchers throwing the ball. Even the quarterbacks got in on the fun catching some balls.

Normally, I wouldn't bat an eye at some of this stuff, but with a head coach like Ben Johnson, everything needs to be treated as intentional.

During his time as the Detroit Lions' offensive coordinator, Johnson was an innovative play-caller and was never afraid to dig into his bag of tricks plays at any moment. Doing silly drills like these build chemistry with the players, but it also gives Johnson an idea of what other players can do on the field.

"I let those guys know, we only do this once a year," Johnson told reporters after practice. "It's an evaluation. We'll circle back into training camp and into the season to see who we can trust to catch the ball or throw the ball."

Darnell Wright makes freakish one-handed catch at practice

For example, right tackle Darnell Wright had a crazy one-handed catch during practice and was even seen mixing in with the other offensive linemen making basket catches down the field. Check it out:

Why does this matter in Wright's case? Well Johnson has already compared his new right tackle to Penei Sewell, someone he ran trick plays with at the same position while calling plays for the Lions.

As for another potential trick play to consider adding to the 2025 playbook, how about sneaking quarterback Caleb Williams down the sideline and having another player toss him the rock?

Maybe it's just me. But, I could easily see Williams pulling off a play like that, similar to what the Lions did last season against the Seahawks when quarterback Jared Goff caught a touchdown from wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown.

The trick plays are definitely on the table in 2025 when Johnson is calling plays and Thursday's session was a sneaky opportunity to see who he can use for those plays.
