Bears request to interview Bills DC Leslie Frazier for head coach job

The Bears moved on from head coach Matt Nagy on Monday, and have already hit the trail towards finding his replacement. Their first stop? With a familiar face.

Chicago requested permission to interview Bills defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. Frazier, 62, played five seasons for the Bears -- including the 1985 Super Bowl winning campaign -- and was the head coach of the division rival Vikings for three seasons a decade ago.

Frazier joined the Bears in 1981 after going undrafted out of Alcorn State. A defensive back, Frazier played sparingly his rookie season before developing into a regular starter by year three. He logged seven interceptions in his first year as a full-time starter, then snared five in just 11 games the following year. In 1985, he helped carry the Bears to the Super Bowl while intercepting six passes, but saw his career cut short after that due to injury troubles.

Following the end of his playing career, Frazier began coaching in the college ranks before joining the Eagles in 1999 as defensive backs coach. He then worked his way up the ranks and got his first opportunity to lead a team as the Vikings' interim head coach in 2010, a role that soon converted to full-time head coach after the season.

Frazier's first year was much of the same as the Vikings went 3-13, but in 2012, he led them to the playoffs behind a 10-6 season fueled by 2,000-yard rusher Adrian Peterson. They were knocked out in the first round by the Packers, however, and went 5-10-1 the following season leading to Frazier's dismissal. Minnesota finished 21-32-1 under Frazier.

In addition to Nagy, the Bears also fired general manager Ryan Pace on Monday. Bears chairman George McCaskey said in his press conference after the moves that team CEO Ted Phillips and Hall of Fame former executive Bill Polian will assist in the search for a new coach and general manager.
