Jordan Elliott followed Robert Saleh from San Francisco to Tennessee this past offseason. An incident in which the veteran defensive tackle retrieved his gun from his parked car resulted in a Titans release last month, though.
Elliott remains a free agent at this time. The NFL’s investigation into the events which led to Tennessee cutting him is ongoing, and a suspension would not come as a surprise. Nevertheless, at least one suitor is in place with Elliott’s future still unclear.
The Bears will host Elliott for a workout next week, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reports. A signing with Chicago would allow for Elliott to reunite with Jeffery Simmons, who was dealt from the Titans to the Bears in a blockbuster trade prior to the upcoming deadline. As Schultz notes, Saleh – who spent two seasons with Elliott as the 49ers’ defensive coordinator before taking Tennessee’s HC gig – is an advocate of Elliott landing an opportunity on a new team.
Over the course of four years in Cleveland while playing out his rookie contract, Elliott totaled 35 starts. During his first trip to free agency, the former third-rounder inked a two-year, $7MM deal with San Francisco. Elliott was a mainstay on his second career team, and he signed another two-year pact in March. Prior to his release, the 28-year-old made five appearances and logged a 34% snap share. He could be viewed as an experienced depth option along the defensive interior for teams willing to move forward with a signing before any potential league discipline is handed down.
The Bears traded away Gervon Dexter shortly before the start of the season. That move was followed in relatively short order by the Simmons acquisition, one which will have implications well beyond 2026. Chicago’s DT depth chart also includes the likes of Grady Jarrett, Shemar Turner and Neville Gallimore as things stand. The team currently ranks third against the run, an area Elliott will look to aid in once his next deal is in place.
A low-cost accord will no doubt be in store in this case. Chicago sits near the bottom of the league in terms of cap space at the moment with $1.84MM available.
