Bears Trade Pitch Lands Caleb Williams $15.9 Million Protector

The Chicago Bears will prioritize rebuilding their offensive line for a second straight NFL offseason in 2025 after trying — and failing — to protect rookie quarterback Caleb Williams for the vast majority of the 2024 season.

Williams was sacked an eye-popping 68 times during his first season as Chicago's starting quarterback, a total that tied him with David Carr for the third-most sacks taken by an NFL quarterback in a single season.

Under the guidance of new head coach Ben Johnson, the Bears will expectedly look to correct their issues on the frontlines. They will also have to contend with the pending free agency of all three of their interior starters from last season.

Fortunately, the Bears might have a solid option on the trade market.

Tyler Brooke of The 33rd Team recently pitched the possibility of the Bears making an offseason trade for Houston Texans guard Kenyon Green, a 2022 first-round draft selection who has started 23 of his first 27 career games.

He also suggested the Bears could land Green for a lowly seventh-round pick.

"Kenyon Green might be one of the most cost-effective moves and a buy-low option for Chicago," Brooke wrote. "The former first-round guard struggled mightily for the Houston Texans this year, allowing five sacks and 28 pressures in pass protection. However, Green has real talent and is still on a rookie deal.

"Texans fans might be sick of him, but new head coach Ben Johnson could view him as a reclamation project with high upside that could make him a long-term starter for a throwaway draft pick."

The Bears should want to at least consider a trade for Green if the Texans are willing to part with him for as low as a seventh-round pick. Chicago holds two seventh-round picks after trading Khalil Herbert to Cincinnati in November.

A trade would also only require the Bears to take on the final year of Green's $15.9 million rookie contract, meaning he would cost about $5 million in 2025.

That's an excellent price for a 23-year-old former first-round talent.

Even if the Bears have eyes on bigger fish in NFL free agency — such as Trey Smith or Drew Dalman — a trade for Green would add high-upside depth at a position that will be trusted to keep Williams upright more often in 2025.
