'Beat up' Baker Mayfield plans to start Sunday vs. Lions

Much has been said and written over the past several days about whether or not Baker Mayfield can be the franchise quarterback the Cleveland Browns have been searching for since 1999. Two things nobody can deny are Mayfield's toughness and the fact the 26-year-old is hurting ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Mayfield was already battling through a serious setback that includes a torn labrum and fractured bone at the top of the humerus of his non-throwing shoulder before he encountered recent foot and knee issues. Per Jake Trotter of ESPN, though, Mayfield told reporters Wednesday he's planning to start for the 5-5 Browns for Sunday's home game versus the 0-8-1 Detroit Lions even though he admitted he's "probably the most beat up" he's been during his entire career.

"The outside of my knee is sore and tender, but that numbness where you can't feel your leg is pretty scary," Mayfield added about the latest injury he suffered in this past Sunday's blowout loss at the New England Patriots. "Haven't had that before, but another new thing for me."

For what it's worth, Mayfield was among several Cleveland players who didn't practice Wednesday:

Backup Case Keenum started in place of Mayfield in the win over the Denver Broncos back on Oct. 21 and completed 21-of-33 passes for 199 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions. Keenum is once again the next man up on the depth chart if Mayfield doesn't practice and, ultimately, cannot play Sunday afternoon.
