Before Eagles contract, Myles Jack mulled odd career path in case there's a 'zombie apocalypse'

Before signing with the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, linebacker Myles Jack believed his NFL career was coming to an end, which prompted him to begin planning for the future. 

Jack, a second-round pick by the Jaguars in 2016, spent last season with the Pittsburgh Steelers but was released in March and didn't receive any offers from teams for the majority of the offseason.

Due to the lack of interest, Jack told reporters at Wednesday's practice that he had considered enrolling in trade school with the intention of becoming an electrician or a plumber. However, Jack didn't want to pursue a new profession just for the money, especially since he's made more than $49.1 million in guaranteed money across the last seven seasons.

Instead, Jack explained that he wanted something to keep him occupied for life after football and to learn something useful in the event that the world is overrun by zombies. 

"I like to work. I couldn't sit at home," Jack said, via The Athletic's Zach Berman. "I've been blessed to make a lot of money. I could retire and sit at the house. … I want to be innovative. If a zombie apocalypse came, I want to be able to build something."

Despite his knee being labeled "a time bomb" leading up to the 2016 NFL Draft, Jack has played 106 games in his career and remains productive when given the opportunity. Last season, Jack appeared in 15 games for Pittsburgh, including 13 starts, recording 104 tackles, three for loss and three pass breakups.

While it took some time to land his new opportunity, Jack appears to be in line to play a significant role in Philadelphia's defense, assuming he makes the 53-man roster. The 27-year-old was thrust into the spotlight on his first day of camp on Tuesday, getting first-team reps while starter Nakobe Dean sat out of practice with an ankle injury,

Although Jack is putting his next endeavor on hold, he doesn't regret taking the gig with Philadelphia, even if it means living out of his suitcase for the time being.

“I got two pairs of drawers, two pairs of sweats, two pairs of socks to my name and my Bible in my bag,” Jack said. “Like I don’t have anything. I’m staying at the hotel. I wouldn’t rather have it any other way, man. I’m here now, and I went to Ross, bought me some white T-shirts, and I’m here now."
