FRISCO - The idea of Jerry Jones' Dallas Cowboys hiring the iconic Bill Belichick to be the team's head coach in 2025? That's long been in play.
The idea of Jones opting to start fresh with iconic Cowboys star Jason Witten as the head coach? We've recently added the future Hall of Famer's name to the list.
But maybe Jerry - presently overseeing a 3-7 team on a five-game losing streak as it twiddles its thumbs toward its "Blow It Up'' remodel in 2025 in a post-Mike McCarthy era - can pull off a King Solomon in reverse.
How about if Dallas hires Belichick and Witten? "The Hoodie'' and "Gold-Jacket Witt'' both handing in the same closet?
Belichick has all the skins on the wall, and if the Joneses do this right, could be allowed the sort of authority around here that would match what his old mentor Bill Parcells once had in working with Jones ... while maybe falling a bit short of the muscle Jimmy Johnson once had here in working with Jones.
In our eyes? Belichick as the head coach and "vice president of football ops'' (which would be a new title here inside The Star) would immediately end the optics and the behaviors of a team that right now is quite "unserious.''
Belichick failed at the end of his tenure in New England not only because he didn't have Tom Brady, but also because he installed unqualified assistants to run his offense.
In this scenario - which we believe would certainly intrigue Jones - Belichick would run the team and the defense and his offensive staff would feature ex-Cowboys star tight end Jason Witten.
Witten, who earned 11 Pro Bowl nods in his 16 years in Dallas, is about as respected a player as the Jones family has ever had. He's currently coaching his sons at a local high school at Argyle's Liberty Christian School. ... and that gig is the limit of his coaching experience.
But Witten working under Belichick? And maybe even being groomed by him to someday take over? That's not only a headline-grabbing idea (which of course appeals to Jones). ... it's also an idea that would resonate in terms of respect for a franchise that right now is being laughed at as well as being an idea that would be a wake-up call for the players who are being laughed at, too.
