Nick Mangold, the stalwart center who anchored Ohio State’s offensive line before becoming a cornerstone of the New York Jets, passed away on October 25, 2025, at the age of 41 due to complications from chronic kidney disease. His death marks the loss of not only one of football’s most consistent and cerebral linemen, but also a beloved leader and community figure whose impact extended far beyond the gridiron.

The Jets announced the news on its X feed on Sunday morning and issued the following statement on the team website:

"Nick was more than a legendary center," said Jets Chairman Woody Johnson. "He was the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade and a beloved teammate whose leadership and toughness defined an era of Jets football. Off the field, Nick's wit, warmth, and unwavering loyalty made him a cherished member of our extended Jets family."

A Buckeye Through and Through

Born in Centerville, Ohio, Mangold’s football journey began at Archbishop Alter High School, where he earned All-Ohio honors. He arrived at Ohio State in 2002 and quickly proved himself as one of the most intelligent and technically sound centers in college football. Mangold was part of the Buckeyes’ national championship team in his freshman year and became a three-year starter at center, logging over 300 minutes of action in each of his final three seasons.

By 2005, Mangold was the unquestioned leader of the Buckeyes’ offensive line. Coaches praised his ability to make all the calls up front and compared him favorably to former Rimington Trophy winner LeCharles Bentley. He earned All-American honors and was a Rimington and Outland Trophy contender, cementing his place among Ohio State’s greats.

In 2023, Mangold was inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame, a recognition he called one of the most meaningful of his life.

A Decade of Dominance in the NFL

Mangold was selected 29th overall by the New York Jets in the 2006 NFL Draft. From the moment he stepped onto the field, he became the heartbeat of the Jets’ offensive line. Alongside fellow first-round pick D’Brickashaw Ferguson, Mangold helped transform the Jets into playoff contenders, leading the team to two AFC Championship appearances in 2009 and 2010.

Over 11 seasons, Mangold started all 164 games he played, earning seven Pro Bowl selections and two First-Team All-Pro honors. His durability and leadership were unmatched—he missed only four games in his first ten seasons. He was inducted into the Jets’ Ring of Honor in 2022 and was recently named a candidate for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2026.

Leadership, Loyalty, and Legacy

Mangold’s leadership extended beyond the field. Known for his wit, humility, and unwavering loyalty, he was a beloved figure in both the Jets and Ohio State communities. After retiring in 2018, he remained active in team events, mentoring young players and even coaching high school football in New Jersey.

In recent years, Mangold faced a private battle with chronic kidney disease, a condition he was diagnosed with in 2006. In October 2025, he made a public plea for a kidney donor, revealing that he had begun dialysis and was in urgent need of a transplant. His message was heartfelt and courageous, reflecting the same strength he showed on the field.

Despite the gravity of his condition, Mangold remained hopeful and grateful, expressing deep appreciation for his family, friends, and fans. “This situation has reminded me how lucky I am to have such an amazing family, friends, and community behind me,” he wrote.

A Final Farewell

Nick Mangold’s passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of those who knew him and those who admired him from afar. He is survived by his wife, Jenny, and their four children—Matthew, Eloise, Thomas, and Charlotte.

As tributes pour in from across the football world, one thing is clear: Nick Mangold was more than a great player. He was a great man. His legacy will endure in the memories of fans, teammates, and communities he uplifted with his strength, humor, and heart.
