The Chicago Bears came up two yards shy of a huge victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday evening.
Caleb Williams' pass to Jahdae Walker fell incomplete in the end zone, handing the Bears (11-5) a heartbreaking 42-38 loss.
Head coach Ben Johnson talked through the final play of the game in his post-game news conference.
"We didn't quite get aligned in the formation we wanted to," Johnson said. "It's on me. I didn't get him (Williams) the call fast enough. He's trying to piecemeal it together. I gotta do a better job on that."
Despite the disappointing final result, Johnson was still proud of his QB1.
"He knew he needed to come out and make some plays for us here tonight," Johnson said. "When you're going against a dynamic offense like that, we talked about, the possibility is us going tit for tat with them. At times, we were able to answer that call. They just ended up making more plays than us."
The loss knocks the Bears out of contention for the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoff picture. Chicago will close the regular season out with a Week 18 matchup against the Detroit Lions at Soldier Field.
