Ben Johnson is getting close to running his ideal offense in Chicago but he's still missing one thing from QB Caleb Williams

The Chicago Bears have won four consecutive games but despite the sustained success lately, frustrations are still being had with the inconsistencies on offense.

Earlier in the season, the run game was the biggest struggle for head coach Ben Johnson's unit. During the bye week, the Bears emphasized the issue and were able to clean it up, rushing for 145 and 222 yards over the last two weeks.

"We've been pretty consistent with that message that it was just going to take some time to get our O-line on the same page and feel good about their fits and their combinations," Johnson said of the run game on Sunday. "I think that's starting to come together."

Week 7's win against the New Orleans Saints even showed some of Johnson's ideal two-back rotation with D'Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai each rushing for 80+ yards with a touchdown. Yet, while the run games improved, the passing efficiency and explosiveness has tanked the last two weeks.

Bears committed to getting the passing game back on track

On Sunday, quarterback Caleb Williams threw for only 172 yards with zero touchdowns and one interception in the win. Granted, some lingering mental mistakes continue to set drives back for the Bears, but the passing game has taken a major step back since coming out of the bye week.

"We weren't efficient enough in the passing game, and we'll see why that was," Johnson added.

In Week 7 specifically, Williams struggled when not facing the blitz and wasn't able to connect on some of the backyard plays he's usually able to stress defenses with. After the win, Williams made sure to hold himself accountable for some of those disconnects.

"I'm going to look at the film and I'm going to figure out and I am going to figure this out," Williams told reporters. "Especially with some of these explosive plays, mainly talking about the on the run stuff. I haven't been efficient with those, I haven't been hitting them, and it's frustrating. We're going to figure this out, I'm going to figure it out."

Williams is still doing a decent enough job operating within the system of the play and finding his reads. And since the bye he's been more accurate with his checkdowns, which was something Johnson specifically asked out of him.

Now, the next step is how the Bears can be more consistent finding these explosive plays to complement what's become a deadly run game. Once Williams can do that, in and out of the pocket, Johnson's scheme is really going to hit its stride down the stretch.

"When we start hitting on those cylinders, when we start having some of these explosive plays, especially when a play breaks and it turns into our second play, it's going to be real devastating to the other side," Williams added. "We're going to figure it out."
