Unfortunately for Ben Johnson, his coaching staff with the Chicago Bears is getting picked apart this offseason.
Johnson, 39, lived up to the hype this season by leading the Bears to an 11-6 record. His squad backed up their regular-season success by taking down the Green Bay Packers in the opening round of the playoffs. Despite an incredible effort by Caleb Williams, they were unable to defeat the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC divisional round.
Shortly after Chicago's season ended, Johnson lost running backs coach Eric Bieniemy to the Kansas City Chiefs. It'll mark his second stint as Andy Reid's offensive coordinator.
"It was an opportunity to come home," Bieniemy said. "Whenever Big Red picks up the phone, that's the only person you'll say, 'Hey, you know what? It may be time to return home because he's giving me this opportunity.' Having this opportunity to come back, that was just something that is tough to pass up on."
On Friday afternoon, Johnson's staff took yet another hit. According to multiple reports, Bears offensive coordinator Declan Doyle has agreed to terms on a deal that'll make him the offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens.
This isn't considered a lateral move for Doyle because he'll be the play-caller in Baltimore. That wasn't going to be the case in Chicago.
Before the Bears even lost Doyle to the Ravens, Johnson talked about losing assistant coaches. He understands it comes with running a successful operation.
"I see future head coaches on this staff. I see future coordinators. I see these young coaches being future position coaches. I see that across the board," Johnson said, via Bears Wire. "So, when you have success and you win games, normally that's what happens. I know we already have some slips coming through that other teams would like to interview some of our guys. And I'm all for it, man. I want these guys to continue to ascend, anything I can do to help them out. I think they all know I'm more than willing to do that."
There might be more responsibility on Johnson's plate next season since Bieniemy and Doyle are moving on. We'll see if he continues thriving in the Windy City.
