The Detroit Lions continue to be missing just one, key piece to their defense that would push them from great to pure contenders for 2025. With Aidan Hutchinson back this year, the need has shrunken just a bit, but the team absolutely needs another pass rusher to pair with him.
We saw what could happen with a front attack like the Philadelphia Eagles' in the Super Bowl - why not attempt to replicate that success if you're the Lions?
Well, it just hasn't appeared to be too much of a priority for the team. They seem ready to run it back with Hutchinson as the top pass rusher for the team, and with hope that rookie Ahmad Hussanein becomes a valuable edge rusher alongside him. If not, the team can also re-sign Za'Darius Smith, who helped them to maintain a solid pass rush in Hutchinson's absence in 2024.
A huge fish for the Lions to try to catch, though, is Cincinnati Bengals pass rusher Trey Hendrickson. The 2024 sack leader is still unsigned, and is still not traded by the Bengals. The team continues to operate under a cloud of dysfunction as it pertains to Hendrickson and his trade request from months ago, and a new wrinkle added to the saga makes him look like a perfect target for Detroit yet again.
Hendrickson's team released a statement to ESPN's Adam Schefter on Monday, exposing Cincinnati for not negotiating with Hendrickson in good faith.
Trey Hendrickson statement today to ESPN: “No communication has taken place between my camp and the organization post draft. The offers prior to the draft did not reflect the vision we shared and were promised last offseason if I continued to play at a high level. Coaches are… pic.twitter.com/2MKBL60ATg

"Rather than using collaboration to get us to a point to bring me home to the team, THEY are no longer communicating. I have been eagerly awaiting a resolution of this situation, but that’s hard to do when there is no discussion and an evident lack of interest in reaching mutual goals,” is the part of the statement from Hendrickson's camp that truly catches your eye.
Clearly, Cincinnati is in over their head. They don't want to pay Hendrickson - likely since they'd have to get pretty close to the blockbuster deal doled out to Myles Garrett this offseason - and they clearly don't like the offers they're receiving for his services. However, the clock is ticking, and we're getting awfully close to Hendrickson sitting out of training camp until a decision is made.
Hendrickson would be the ultimate move to make for the Lions to solidify them as the team to beat not just in the NFC North, but in the entire conference. They'd compete tightly with the Eagles with Hendrickson added, and would add a golden insurance policy alongside a returning Hutchinson.
A recent report from Lions insider Mike Payton suggested the team is out on Hendrickson. But, that was before this statement. We'll see if this obvious tension changes anything for Detroit's front office.
