For Cincinnati Bengals fans, watching the Pittsburgh Steelers stumble is always a lot of fun to witness. As the Steelers enter their Aaron Rodgers era, there is a lingering question for them, which is who will be the WR2 on the roster?
The Steelers traded for DK Metcalf this offseason and sent George Pickens to Dallas. Metcalf is obviously a very talented receiver but he can't do it all. Who will step up behind him on the depth chart?
The mystery of the Steelers' WR2 position has followed them into training camp where that was chosen as Pittsburgh's biggest position battle this summer. ESPN's Brooke Pryor wrote that, "The room is led by DK Metcalf, but the order behind him is a little murky. During minicamp, wide receivers coach Zach Azzanni said receiver Calvin Austin III, a speedy yards-after-catch (YAC) threat drafted in 2022, was the team's WR2 -- but there are other players on the roster battling for the role, including Robert Woods, Scotty Miller and Roman Wilson."
Austin was a fourth-round pick by the Steelers in 2022 and is coming off a season where he had 548 receiving yards and four touchdowns in 17 games. If that's the Steelers' best option behind Metcalf, Bengals fans are going to have a field day laughing at their offense (or lack thereof).
As for Woods, he has been around the block in the NFL, entering his 13th season with his fifth different team. He had just 203 receiving yards in 15 games with the Texans a season ago and is now joining a new team that he's not accustomed to.
Rodgers and Metcalf will make the Steelers' offense formidable but what happens when defenses take Metcalf away as an option? That's when Pittsburgh will need someone to step up and will Austin, Woods, or someone else be able to do that?
This could bode well for the Bengals as they'll be striving to move up in the AFC North after two disappointing seasons. Let's hope the depth behind Metcalf disappoints during the regular season and the Rodgers drama ramps up when he doesn't have reliable targets to throw the ball to. We could all use the entertainment after all.
